はじめに／Welcome

　16世紀中頃、堺はヨーロッパとの自由貿易港として栄え、異国の珍しい産物を国内に紹介すると共に、その文化も吸収し、育てることができた自由で活発な町でした。また、西は海、東南北が堀で囲まれ、戦国時代にもかかわらず自治を保っていたことからイタリアの自由都市ヴェニスと比較されて「東洋のヴェニス」と呼ばれた町でもありました。
　このように、古くからヨーロッパとの関わりを持つ堺でコンクールを開く事により、次代を担う若い演奏家たちが、舞台経験のチャンスと他の国、地域の人々との交流の場を得て、その才能を開花させ、大きく羽ばたく礎となればとの願いを持ってこれを開催する次第です。

In the middle of the 16th century the city of Sakai flourished as a free port, open to trade with Europe. Sakai was a vibrant city, sometimes known as the “Venice of Japan”.
The “Sakai International Piano Competition” was founded in 1996 by the “Sakai Piano Association” and is held every two years. The purpose of the competition is to give young musicians the opportunity to appear on a world stage and develop their talents in an atmosphere of multinational communication. It is hoped that their success in this competition will be the cornerstone of their careers.
